This is the last thing I ever wanted to write, yet life wins and here I am doing it… Guys, my sweet Mabel left this world Sunday morning while we were out provision shopping. We came home and found her as we had left her, safe and warm in her bed, only she was no longer with us and we could not get her back. There are no words to express the pain and anguish I felt in that moment of realization. No amount of crying, pleading, praying, bargaining and finally denial could change it. A light had gone out in our home. Our Mabel had gone. She was the quirkiest, funniest, cutest little old lady ever. She was noisy and demanding, but stealthy as a Ninja when it came to stalking King and Harley. She definitely kept us on our toes and made us laugh at loud with her stink eye. I loved this girl with all my heart. We had such a special relationship and understanding. We had each other’s back. The way she looked at me melted my heart. She was so special. Now she is free and living in sunshine every day, and at night I look above for the brightest star in the sky because surely that must be her.
Please welcome Mabel to our rescue family. She writes: I once was found wondering the street and I was taken in by a rescue group. A nice family adopted me, but after a few years and a lot of changes, I find myself back with a rescue group.
I’m looking for a furever home where I can just chill and enjoy a stress-free life for the years I have left. I am a beautiful, chunky brindle gal. I am 9 years old, but that is only part of the story. I have plenty of life to live and love to give. After these photos were taken, I went to the vet’s office and received a mani-pedi. It was so nice!
I’m going to enjoy a little spoiling here and then I will be ready to come and live with you forever. So get that application filled out so you will be ready when I am. Maybe you’ll be matched to me!
6/14/18 Update: Vet update on foster girl Mabel: Mabel has hookworms and X-rays show her heart is enlarged, with no apparent murmur. The trachea is pushed up by the size of the heart. There’s also a dense area near the colon/kidney area. She is such a thick girl, it’s challenging to get a good film. We’ll try again for a better shot, but we may need to get an ultrasound of the abdomen and the heart. Keep her in your thoughts!
8/12/18 Update: This bundle of sweetness is 9 years old and a total doll! She was a little on the “fluffy” side when she arrived and wanted to slim down a bit before she took pics (can’t blame her a bit!). She has been “exercising” daily and dieting and the results are starting to show! She may not be the fastest walker or the longest walker, but it’s her spirit that counts. She is getting it done one step at a time! Mabel is a daddy’s girl and always wants to be next to foster dad, but because that personal space area is getting really crowded, we sometimes have a few sharing “issues” with foster brother Kingman, so Mabel has decided she does not like him! She is great with all our dogs and the cat. Mabel prefers to spend her day in our bedroom lounging in her crate or bed and her evenings next to foster dad. She is a floor dog, not a couch dog, so that works out nicely with Kingman! She loves a good tummy rub, lots of kisses and special attention, which we are happy to give. Mabel is a happy girl that wiggles and prances her way into your heart and is simply looking for a daddy of her own that she does not have to share.
9/25/18 Update: Mabel is now the Queen of the World! She lost 5 lbs, got her mammary tumor removed and a little dental work done, and now she is feeling fabulous and ready to look for her forever home (which is anywhere foster boy Kingman does not visit! LOL!
11/21/18 Update: Miss Mabel found the perfect place for a nap on a chilly, fall day! She may be 9, but she has spunk and personality to spare. She loves her humans and most of her housemates (not Kingman!) and gives the best “side eye” we have seen yet! She will make you laugh out loud! She loves going outside to hang out, car rides and belly rubs. Her idea of a perfect time is sitting beside you on the couch and cuddling. She is a happy and sweet girl who dreams of finding her perfect home.
12/21/18 Update: Miss Mabel wanted to check in and let everyone know how much she is enjoying the nice weather we have been having. She loves being outdoors and will just sit, chill and take it all in for as long as you let her.
Mabel wants nothing more than to be loved and petted, but does have some jealousy issues with our other foster dog, Kingman. She picks who she likes and who she does not. She is a senior lady at 9 years old and she gets that right! She knows who is annoying (are you listening Kingman?). Mabel loves all people and is happiest when someone is touching her. She is housebroken and quite the funny girl. She hates her daily eye drops, but lets you do it eventually so she can have her “good girl” treat! Mabel minds well and is just a sweet as pie.
She told me she loved us, but really wants her “own” home for Christmas, preferably one without other dogs or with one she actually likes (not Kingman!). We have to split up the “run of the house” time and she would like full access and no King. Not an unreasonable request! 😉
Mabel is a joy and for someone who wants to add an awesome older girl to their home, she would be ideal. If you have a couch and you like to use it, you could be perfect for her!
1/7/19 Update: Mabel certainly enjoyed this weekend’s sunshine and warm weather. She couldn’t care less that she is laying in mud and weeds! She has the funniest habit that actually alarmed one of our neighbors (I will try to get it on video!)…she will just throw herself on her side and start rolling, and in our front yard that is downhill! She cracks me up and scared our neighbor to death as she thought something was wrong with her. Nope, just having some Mabel fun! She continues to remind me that it’s the little things – sunshine, fresh air and having some fun that matter most in life. She never fails to bring a smile to my face, even if she needs a bath from rolling across poop!
4/24/19 Update: Mabel had a great weekend, helping the foster parents get the backyard ready for summer fun. Her supervisory skills are A++. Mabel adores being outside no matter the weather. She continues to make us laugh with her sass and bossy britches attitude. She gets along great with our other dogs and cats, but will still attempt to jump foster Kingman out of nowhere. For her safety, they are always kept apart or under close supervision. Mabel loves to cuddle and just hang out. She is a fun senior with lots of personality and spunk. She loves her people, especially men (go figure) and is the queen of belly rub demands. If she was one of the Golden Girls, she would be Blanche! LOL! To know Mabel is to love her!
5/10/19 Update: Mabel loves being outside in any weather and would spend all day and night out there if we let her. She has to be carried inside or she won’t come back in! LOL! Attitude galore in this senior girl! She wants what she wants and she intends to get it. Lucky for her, she’s cute enough to accomplish this most of the time! She just rolls onto her back and gives you her sunny side up… and what can you do then? Love on her some more! 😄 She loves her sun time, but is smart enough to hit the shady spots when she gets warm. She is perky, smart and funny and has such a sassy personality (just ask Kingman… ha!). Mabel is a joy to foster and only seeks love and attention. One look at that face and you just get sucked right in. To know her is to adore her. I know we sure do!
6/5/19 Update: Don’t get me wrong, Mabel LOVES hot weather, but foster mom won’t let her love it as much as she wants to and that’s what makes her have “grumpy face”. We literally have to carry her inside after 5 minutes. I swear this dog would live in the yard (and probably has in her earlier years)full time if we let her!
7/14/19 Update: Mabel had a BIG Saturday and was soooo pooped, she was sleeping sitting up! She got to go see Dr. Larsen, give Taylor a present, meet lots of people and lots of animals and got lots of shots. Since she has successfully lost weight, she even got to eat some Whataburger on the way home! Then she got to play (tolerate) with a little one at home. She was too tired to care about anything but dinner and bed! Can you tell??!!
7/27/19 Update: Mabel was poolside this past weekend! She was the hit of the party, as she lounged in the shade with her vino and enjoyed all the petting and attention. But good things only last so long (10 minutes in her case!) and off she went to the air-conditioned comfort of the house. She is our social butterfly and loves people, children, cats and all dogs (who are not named Kingman)! She is a hoot!
