Please send your love to our volunteers Nancy and Scott, as they had to say goodbye to alumnus Samson Reid.
Nancy writes: It is with deep sorrow we share with you that our beloved Samson Reid, AKA Sammy, left for heaven this past week.
Sammy came into rescue from a Texas shelter in October 2020 very sick and emaciated. He was skin and bones with a history of chronic diarrhea. Dr. Leah Larsen with Bright Star Veterinary Clinic had a sense from the beginning there was something seriously wrong and started the work up. Thankfully, after numerous tests and a trip to internal medicine we had a diagnosis: exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI).
This was the reason for the chronic diarrhea and poor weight gain. EPI is a genetic condition in certain dogs and cats that lack enzymes to digest their food. Without proper enzymes, they have malabsorption, weight loss and chronic hunger.
We took Sammy in as a foster in the spring of 2021. We knew early on he would need extra medical care. He would need a home-cooked diet with extra TLC if he were to thrive and survive; so we foster failed and adopted him in October 2021.
We worked closely with our veterinarian, Dr. Sylvia Gutierrez at Stonebriar Veterinary Centre, and consulted a veterinary nutritionist. Together, we created a home-cooked recipe, along with special enzymes and supplements for Sammy and he started to gain weight – Fat Sam or Big Sam we would call him.
As he felt better, he would wave a high five, roll over for belly rubs, and catch Hawaiian rolls in the air like baseballs. We had a few good years, lots of laughter and we were grateful for that. You just always want more.
Unfortunately the last year was particularly difficult with so much suffering. We could see Sammy wasting away before our eyes battling EPI, atypical Addison’s disease, severe otitis media, and then a rare inner ear adenocarcinoma.
We were at the veterinary clinic constantly trying to find answers and make him well. Sadly, this aggressive inner ear adenocarcinoma ravaged him so fast. It was devastating, like nothing we or any of the veterinary specialists had ever seen before!
We all fought with him as hard as we could, it just wasn’t enough. We were so hopeful the TECA would finally stop the cycle of suffering, but sadly with the diagnosis of metastatic cancer, we were too late. That was the fatal blow.
We wanted so desperately to comfort him and make him well. We never quit trying, held onto hope, but always feared cancer was the menacing evil beast we were up against and unfortunately, that proved to be true.
Sammy’s skeletons and chronic pain made his care extremely challenging, which made the pain worse for all of us physically, mentally, and emotionally. It was truly heartbreaking.
Ultimately, we beat the cancer before it could inflict anymore pain and destroy him. Sammy was a stoic and strong warrior, but he was ready for the battle to end, go off his EPI diet, eat a few good meals and rest. Sammy enjoyed bacon and eggs, a couple steaks and a rotisserie chicken on his last day.
He also had a very special visit from a dear friend in rescue, Tina, a sweet woman who does a lot of our shelter pick ups. Tina never met Sammy until his last day, but it was as if she had known him forever. She came to say goodbye with flowers, love and a tray of Lunchables.
Despite Sammy’s pain, in that moment, I saw pure joy in his eyes and hers. He enjoyed every last bite and then played a little with his toy. It was as if they had known each other for years. That precious moment is forever burned in my memory. Tina, thank you for your compassion. It meant so much to us and Sammy.
On 2/18/24, we gave Sammy back to his loving God who created him and the only one who could ultimately stop the suffering, heal him and give him peace and a regular diet in heaven!
We don’t want Sammy’s suffering or death to be in vain. He was a very precious boy who unfortunately, had a life of chronic illness, but he was dearly loved. His life had meaning and value and he touched lives for the better.
Remember Sammy…. If your dog or cat has chronic diarrhea it may be EPI. If your dog has chronic ear infections, don’t assume it’s bacterial. Get it checked out sooner than later because it may be cancer!
Thank you, God, and thank you, Lone Star Bulldog Club Rescue, Dr. Leah Larsen and Bright Star Veterinary Clinic for saving him initially for us to love! Thank you, Dr. Sylvia Gutierrez and Stonebriar Veterinary Centre, Dr. Robert Radasch and DVSC, Dr. Reid Garfield and ADC Dermatology Specialists, Dr. Amanda Dolian, Loving Goodbyes, Dr. Fiona McCord, Compassionate Care Pet Services. Sammy, so many people came together to help you over the years!
This picture is how we remember Sammy ~ handsome, regal, strong, happy and healthy and running free in the bluebonnets!
Sammy, we love you! Until we meet again you will always be our Big Sam and big in our hearts.
Hello everyone and Happy Halloween!
We went to the pumpkin patch and look who we found, Annabel and Samson Reid!
We are happy to announce that these two great pumpkins have been picked from the patch and are now forever part of our pack! Proud to say we foster failed again and got the best of the bunch!
We are beyond blessed and forever grateful to those who were part of their rescue and rehabilitation; from the animal shelters to LSBCR to the Frisco Veterinary ER to Brightstar Veterinary Clinic to Stonebriar Veterinary Clinic. So MANY compassionate people have been part of their healing love and care! Please know you are deeply appreciated and will never be forgotten.
To those of you following Annabel ‘s hospice adventures, please don’t worry, we will continue on her adventures and we will definitely continue to keep you all updated along the journey.
Hope your Halloween was spooktacular!
4/13/21 Update: Do you remember me? I hope so! I’m still here and have a story to tell.
4/20/21 Update: It’s been a busy week getting settled into my new foster home, but all is going very well! I’m still getting to know everyone and establishing trust and relationships with my foster siblings and parents.
5/4/21 Update: I’ve been busy chasing rabbits! I loooooove all things small, furry and fast! I’m in hot pursuit, as soon as I’m out the door pulling all in tow at the end of the leash.
