Sweetie Pie (now Barbie)

Sweetie Pie (now Barbie)

Wow does Sweetie Pie have a story!

It all started when a sweet Bulldog with cropped ears entered resuce. She and had complications following her spay. She needed to be on oxygen and was monitored for fever. When she recovered we got a call asking us to foster her.

My wife told Diane “please don’t give me a dog that might die on me!” Dianne assured Sarah Sweetie Pie would be fine. Plus, as we would find out, Sweetie Pie was a fighter!

Sweetie Pie showed up at our house awaiting heartworm treatment. Treatment was hard on her little body. We monitored her closely and nursed her back to health for weeks with chicken broth, meatballs, and lots of love.

Sweetie Pie was in rescue for three months before we got a call about a potential family.

Fast forward to today. I’ll bet Sweetie Pie is one of the most traveled Bulldogs around. To get to her forever home she travelled through Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, California, and finally arrived in Seattle Washington. It was a heck of a journey and she was perfect the whole time. She could sense her forever family was waiting for her.

More than a few tears were shed when we loaded her up, but we knew rescue found her the most perfect forever family.

Sweetie Pie is now Barbie. She’s being spoiled beyond belief. She has a mom, human sister, two dog siblings, a few cat siblings, and even a rabbit sibling. We can’t wait for updates from her forever family – they’ve gotten her a raincoat for those rainy Seattle days, and have promised her walks to the beach. Look at the smile on her face – she’s living the dream with her forever family.

Hello bulldog friends I just wanted everyone to know that Tuesday was the best day of my life. On Tuesday I was saved.

Last week I was picked up by the local animal control as I was wandering around town. Most dogs would hate that, but for me, I was relieved. I had had babies and I was leaking milk. I have dried blood all over my private area, and a gash above my eye.  A while back someone cropped my ears to my head and for the life of me, I don’t know why.

As I sat in the shelter all I could think was “please don’t come get me.”  Please just leave me here. I was counting down the days until my “stray” hold was over because I knew wherever I would go had to be better than where I had been. And just like that rescue came for me.

They were so wonderful to me. The ladies picked me up and gently lifted me in the car. They told me they knew I felt bad and they cried when they saw the back end of me. They promised me they would not take pictures of that, that they would clean me up, medicate my hurts, and help me forget my past. And of all things, they named me Sweetie. Sweetie Pie. They told me I had the sweetest face, and they knew my name should be sweet like pie.

So, here I am Miss Sweetie Pie, and I am so thankful that I was rescued!

4/25/22 Update:  We learned today that foster girl Sweetie Pie is heartworm positive…. which is not so sweet.

Let this be a reminder to everyone: don’t forget to protect your own dogs. It only takes one mosquito to put your dog at risk!

5/12/22 Update:  Did you say her name was “Sweetie Pie” or “sleepy pie?”

Sweetie Pie has been at her foster home for almost a week now and she’s doing so well. She loves our kids and has slowly warmed up to the other dogs in the house.

It didn’t take Sweetie Pie long to believe that she needs to be on the couch at all times, but she will settle for the middle of the kitchen floor if someone is trying to cook.

She goes in her crate without a problem and goes potty outside. She’s been doing so well around the house that we let her sleep on the couch last night. I think she enjoyed it.

Sweetie Pie is preparing for heartworm treatment. While she prepares, we are going to make sure she gets all the love and attention she can get.

5/18/22 Update:  Sweetie Pie continues to do so well in her foster home. She loves other dogs, trying new treats and going on walks.

5/25/22 Update:   We don’t play favorites in our house, but if we did, Sweetie Pie would be at the top of the list! She gets along well with everyone, doesn’t complain and helps clean up if the kiddos drop food at the dinner table. Sweetie Pie loves attention and will sit next to you forever if you let her. She’s great on walks, but is about to have mandatory rest following her heartworm treatment.

6/1/22 Update:  Sweetie Pie goes in for heartworm treatment tomorrow morning. She’s super sweet, loves treats, and can’t get enough attention. Sweetie is great with other dogs and children. She’ll let you know she’s done eating by sitting in her food bowl.

6/9/22 Update:   Sweetie Pie had her heartworm treatment this week, so now she’s on her required rest. I don’t think she minds it because she gets to go on private mini walks and have special cuddle time without other dogs.

6/13/22 Update:  Sweetie Pie had her heartworm treatment last week. On Friday, she became very lethargic. At the direction of Dr. Larsen, we stopped her steroids and are focused on keeping her hydrated. She loves chicken broth with her water. She’s not eating much, so we’re treating her with meatballs, chicken and treats. She loves napping on the couch and soaks up all the pets.

7/1/22 Update:  Sweetie Pie is so close to her heartworm treatment “freedom date” (July 2). When it’s bedtime and she’s in the crate next to Blossom Rose, she tries to play calmly. She’s ready to play and scoot around the backyard with the other dogs.

You might notice some gunk in and around her eyes. She’s been on eye ointment for awhile. Dr. Larsen sent us new eye drops that seem to help provide dry-eye relief.

7/14/22 Update:  Sweetie Pie loves being off her required rest for heartworm treatment. She’s back to playing, running and jumping around. I think she’s even gained a little weight!

7/19/22 Update:  Sweetie Pie had an amazing time at the Bulldog Bonanza yesterday. She came home and slept all night.

Sweetie Pie has a meet-and-greet set up in August. We could not be more excited!
