Please lift up your thoughts and prayers for Satchmo’s foster parents. The thing we fear most just happened to them–the sudden passing of their foster.
It’s with a broken heart I am sending this today. My grumpy old foster boy Satchmo was sitting at my feet, tried to move, had a seizure and was gone in a matter of a few minutes. He was loved by our family and we were very blessed to spend the last year and 1/2 with him!
Bulldog friends, I have returned to rescue. I thought my forever family and I were a great match. Turns out it was not a “love connection” with their bulldog. You never know till you try. So now I need a foster home and a new application for a family that needs a hunk like me.
I heard through the grapevine that Axl had an emergency surgery on Sunday because the other one didn’t keep her lady parts in place. I had a Bulldog meltdown and begged to leave to be with my sister. So, here I am. I saw my sister today. We were face-to-face and I licked her on her cheek. I begged to get in the crate with her, but due to her delicate state, all I could do was sit by her, tell her I loved her and that she was going to be alright.
I cried big Bulldog tears when I saw Axl because she and I are like twins. Same size, same colors, same personality… really same everything except I am the brother. And, as a brother, I will be right beside my sister, holding her paw and helping her get well. I too need a little surgery, but I expect that to be a piece of cake compared to what Axl had. Hopefully, we can have a photo shoot together soon.
9/16/18 Update: Update from foster boy Alex: I’m checking in today so everyone will know how my sister Axl Rose and I are doing. As you might remember, my sister Axl Rose was in critical shape when she joined rescue because, well, her lady parts prolapsed… and what was supposed to be on the inside was on the outside. And I knew she was very sick. I begged to join her, to comfort her, and support her. And I got to do just that.
I have been by her side and I am happy to report her stitches come out Tuesday and she is doing amazing. And me? I had a little surgery myself and I am doing amazing! My stitches come out on Tuesday too. Sooooo, you know what that means. We’ll be leaving the vet clinic to head to a foster home, and then we will be looking through the applications for our new family.
As you can see from the pictures, I am a little bigger and thicker. That’s because I am a fella. Axl Rose was so sick, she didn’t eat much, so she is smaller and thinner. We both love people and other dogs. We might chase a cat or two, but never in a mean way. We just love to see cat fur fly. We would love to be adopted together, but we are both OK now being apart. We both love attention, we both jump and run and play. We are Alex and Axl Rose and we are 2 years old.
12/5/22 Update: I’m back!
It’s been a while since I was here. It was 2018 and my name then was Alex. I have been living the good life down south, but there were some changes in my family after my dad died. My mom went back to work and now she travels.
It was a sad and emotional goodbye, but staying home alone was not my idea of living. Even though I’m 6 now and really enjoy resting more, I still want to spend time with people. So, I packed my bed, toys and eye meds and made my way back to rescue.
I look forward to seeing some of my old rescue friends and letting them know that I am back. I will be looking forward to a new sofa, a warm fire and seeing Santa again.
All and all, I am super easy! I take eye drops and allergy meds. I need a medicated bath and I brought my own shampoo. I walk slowly, but I get where I am going.
I’ve been eating a vegetarian food, but I am going to explore adding some salmon to it. My former vet thought my allergies might be environmental and now because I have moved back, maybe I can try some salmon or steak. I can only hope!
I called Dr. Larsen to let her know I was back, and she screamed! She said she was so excited to see me and that her lap was ready for me whenever I could get there. I am going next week and I know she has treats!
12/5/22 Update: Satchmo here, well yesterday I moved into my foster home. I got a nice bath , belly rubs and face washing. Foster Mom has been calling me MO. I am not a fan of doing well almost anything unless it is my idea. I have very itchy skin but hopefully when I see Dr Larson she can help me with that. So I’m going to hangout here, see the Dr and start to feel better. Stay tuned love Mo
12/26/22 Update: Mo says HI and Happy New Year. So a few weeks ago I moved in with my foster family after loosing my dad to Covid. Well guess what FM had covid, now has covid pneumonia (she is not happy about it either!) But anyway she has learned alot about me in the last few weeks:
1. I am stubborn! I hate the grass and am happy to just pee on the floor. So she has to leash me and make me go outside. If she forces me out every few hours I’m good and don’t pee on her floor. (I am crate trained and never pee in my crate) see just stubborn
2. I came to her home with many medical issues that we are working on. Skin irritation, ears infected, eye infection, really overgrown nails which have affected my feet and a thyroid problem. Well I went to Dr L she and her team worked me over! My skin is so much happier and my fur is getting so soft now. Ears look great. My thyroid meds have me being more active I am playing with toys and wrestling with foster brother now! My left eye is still an issue , I must see the Dr again in Jan so I’m sure she will check on it.
3. I love to be loved. I will sit smack dab beside you and let you pet and snoogle with me all you want!
4. I am food possessive I will eat my food then try to steal foster brothers and sisters. I can get snappy about it and FM has to remind me who is boss. (I like to let her think it is her)
Overall I am adjusting well for a grumpy old man!! Well that’s all for now! Love Satchmo
1/10/23 Update: I am pretty content. We have a routine now in the house. Foster Mom or Dad make me go out every three hours to pee and then I don’t pee on the floor. Sometimes, I even go out willingly and don’t need the leash to get me to move.
I like napping a lot and chewing on a bone or two.
Do you like my camouflage picture? Foster Mom is washing the Ruggable. She said it stinks like “dog!” Really? I don’t complain that her blanket stinks like a human.
1/31/23 Update: I’m getting the hang of chew toys. Foster Mom says that’s good because it helps clean my teeth.
Foster Mom was mean to me last night! She put me on the leash and forced me to go out in the snow before bedtime to potty. How rude! It was cold and I was not impressed. But then I came in to my warm bed so all was well.
3/3/23 Update: A few weeks ago, I went to see Dr. Larsen for a little nip and tuck! Now, I have beautiful fake pink eye lashes for a few weeks. I have been laying around healing up, but Foster Mom says she already sees a difference in my activity level. I can see better and have been more playful. I can’t wait to “see” who wants to give me a furever home!
7/5/23 Update: I have been laying low the last few weeks. Foster Mom says I’m doing and looking good. In fact just this morning, I got a nice massaging bath. All my nooks and crannies are now clean and sexy!
7/25/23 Update: From Satchmo. (AKA) sir sleeps : I like my naps and I van not lie; You other puppers can’t deny; When you have a comfy bed, on which to lay your head…… Why would you ever go outside?
9/12/23 Update: I’ve been on the down low lately. You see, over a month ago, I had an autoimmune flare up according to Dr. Larsen and I was miserable.
It caused me to lose 7 lbs. and I was not interested in eating at all. My foster mom made gravy and put it on my food to bribe me. It worked! Oh, and foster brother Odin and foster sister Sugar loved it too.
Anyway, I was scratching badly. I started losing my fur by the handfuls. My foster dad was so worried, he got me out to see Dr. Larsen. She gave me meds and I feel so much better. I still look a little rough from the episode, but I’m still super loveable!
Today, my foster mom washed the Ruggable so I had to help her put it back down. I’m a helper!
1/11/24 Update: I had a great holiday season with my foster family. We had treats and cookies, and treats…. I helped decorate the treat… OOPS, I mean tree (heehee) and then I would just lay in my bed and stare at it.
Foster Mom says I need to see Dr. Larsen this month, as I am due for my yearly appointment. It is hard to believe I moved back in with my rescue group one year ago. I am still the same, sometimes grumpy old man who loves his routine.
If you’re looking for a hot single male to warm up your couch, I may be your perfect match.
5/24/24 Update: I may be a bit older, grumpier and have some health issues, but I love my foster family.
This week, I gave Foster Mom a new worry ~ I had a grand mal seizure on Tuesday evening.
Foster Mom felt like it lasted forever. Lucky for me, Foster Mom is a nurse and took great care of me.
After I came to, she hugged me and babied me a whole lot more then usual. She even slept in the living room with me to make sure nothing else happened overnight. Lucky for us, I haven’t had another one.
Foster Mom did call my favorite vet, Dr Larsen, and she sent some meds to Foster Mom’s pharmacy just for me. The thing is, the pharmacy put my name in as FATchmo, not Satchmo. Let me tell you: I am a trim 35 lbs. Who are they calling fat?
Anyway, keep me in your prayers I do not like having seizures. They are no fun!
