11/21/25 FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS ~ It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the devastating news that our sweet foster girl, Buttons, passed away on Wednesday.

During what was meant to be a routine surgery, Buttons went into cardiac arrest. The veterinary team fought for nearly thirty minutes to bring her back. They tried everything. We all did. But her body couldn’t recover.

We are shattered. The vet staff is shattered. Everyone who knew her, or had simply been following her journey, knew how special she was.

Losing a dog in rescue is one of the hardest things we ever face. We do everything we can to keep them safe: extensive bloodwork, diagnostics, careful planning and every precaution possible to ensure they’re healthy enough for anesthesia. And yet… sometimes, despite doing everything right, we still lose them. And it breaks us every single time.

Buttons deserved the world. She deserved the beautiful future we were all dreaming about for her, a home filled with warmth, safety and the gentle love she had been waiting for. It hurts deeply to know she never got to experience that life outside of our hopes and plans.

What she did have was love. She was cherished. She was held. She was protected. And she will be remembered.

Run free, sweet Buttons. We wanted so badly to give you forever. 💔

10/4/25 INTRODUCTION: Please welcome Buttons to our rescue family! From volunteer Dianne: Sometimes, you pick up a Bulldog from the shelter who just breaks your heart. And Buttons is one of them.

She’s estimated to be around 3 years old, but when you look into her eyes… she seems much older. She avoids eye contact. I don’t think it’s out of fear. I think it’s because life has taught her not to expect kindness.

Buttons was picked up as a stray, and no one ever came looking for her. But as she waited in the shelter, she may have hoped it would stay that way. When you’ve never known what it feels like to be safe, full or cared for… hope can be hard to hold onto.

She’s covered in fleas, with white gums that hint at anemia… likely the result of neglect, malnutrition and parasites. Her back is covered in small growths or knots that we’ll need to investigate further. And her eyes? Each has a cherry eye, but they’re not inflamed — just dull and white, much like the light that’s faded behind them.

And yet… Buttons is gentle. Sweet. Soft. Trusting. She’s a Bulldog who deserves every ounce of goodness this world has to offer, and we’re going to make sure she finally gets it.

Stay tuned for more updates as she begins her healing journey.
