ChubbChubbs was ADOPTED!!! It was a bittersweet day for Chubbs’ foster mama as he moved in with his forever family today! Chubbs’ forever parents met us at his dermatology appointment this morning and from there, Chubbs was off to his new home to live in the lap of luxury. Chubbs has no fur siblings which means he’ll be getting 100% of his parents’ attention, something he’s desperately wanted. I’m so glad we found a family that was willing to look past his medical issues and love him for who he is.+s is a 6 yr. old male that weighs approximately 60 lbs. He is good with other dogs as long as the initial introduction is handled slowly. He is also good with humans of all sizes.
There is really nothing quite like a bulldog face. Just take Chubbs as the perfect example. Is there anything as great as this face? It’s dignified, yet goofy. Exalted, yet humble. And of course, adorable, yet chubby. Chubbs’ face represents everything that is good about the bulldog.
Chubbs came into rescue as an owner surrender because his family couldn’t up with what they believed where his allergies. As it turns out, he has been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, for which he will always require medication. Because of his health issue, a new home with bull experience would be ideal. For now, Chubbs’ skin is on its way to looking good as new in no time. and he’ll be ready to quit worrying about the itching and start worrying about the belly-rubs and treats he’ll be getting in his forever home.
With a little warming up, Chubbs has become a great brother to the other bully in his home, though he sometimes snaps at other dogs if introduced too quickly. He may not be the dog to take to the dog park, but his laid-back and part-of-the-pack demeanor just makes a home where he can be lazy ideal. He seems to be most at-ease in a quiet environment and really just likes to kick it at home with his pack. He is a sweet boy that just needs some special attention.
Additionally, Chubbs does great in his crate and is both home and leash trained. Aside form his medical issue, he is a pretty low-maintenance guy!
5/17/2015 Update: !Chubbs is one stubborn bulldog. He loves his kennel and sometimes refuses to come out. Not even treats will do the trick. Yesterday we went for a walk and made it 2 houses down before Chubbs decided he wasn’t going any further. So after a 10 minute stand off, we were back in the house! He does love attention but he will let you know when he wants it. He does everything on his own time.
As far as his skin issues are concerned, he looks better each day. He continues to take his medicine without a fuss. He has an appointment with the specialist in 2 weeks so we are praying for a good report!
Chubbs has entropion and will need surgery to fix this once his skin is under control. For now, he has staples around his eyes to hold back his eyelids. Hopefully we can get his eyes fixed soon as he doesn’t seem to like having the staples in.
5/10/2015 Update: Chubbs is patiently waiting for his skin issues to clear up so he can find his furever family. Chubbs has an auto0immune disorder that requires that he be on medication for the rest of his life. Currently he is in the process of finding the exact amount of medication is required to keep his condition in check.He saw Dr. W yesterday and although the blisters and sores are healing, he thinks it’s spreading further down his back. For now, he wants to continue the medications he’s on and follow up with the specialist at the end of the month. Chubbs has a long road ahead of him but he’s quite a little trooper.
5/23/2015 Update: Chubbs had a great week. He had no problems snoozing through the thunderstorms. For the past 3 days he hasn’t been in his kennel at all. He’s been out and about exploring the house and always wondering what his foster parents are up to, especially when they are in the kitchen. If Chubbs smells food, he comes trotting in. This week we discovered that he loves coconut oil, but only if you spoon-feed it to him. If you put it in his bowl, he’s not touching it. He definitely has his foster parents trained well!
Yesterday, I decided to get Chubbs out the house and take him to Hollywood Feed on a food run. He loved the car ride but when we got to the store he rolled over, played dead and refused to get out the car. When Chubbs decides he’s not doing something there is no arguing with him.
Chubbs is a laid back bulldog that just wants a little loving now and then and any family would be lucky to have him.
5/31/2015 Update:Chubbs was so excited that the sun came out today that he actually ran to the door to go for his walk when I put his leash on. He did a little bit of sun bathing today, but not much as he still doesn’t have much hair.
We go to see the dermatologist Wednesday and are hoping for a good report. It’s been a little over a month since Chubbs was diagnosed with pemphigus and we’ve already noticed a big improvement in his condition in that short amount of time.
6/7/2015 Update: Chubbs had a busy week full of vet appointments. He went to the dermatologist and overall, Dr. Crow was pleased with his progress. Chubbs even got the green light to take a bath. He is looking (and smelling) much better! He still has a few new lesions on him so the vet thinks he may be developing a resistance to his antibiotics. Dr. Crow took a culture and we will follow up next week to see if the antibiotics need to be changed. He also requested that we sponge bathe Chubbs with bleach water for the next 2 weeks. So every night Chubbs gets in the bath tub and gets a sponge bath, patiently waiting for the torture to be over. I put some peanut butter on the side of the tub to distract him but he licks it up faster than I can bathe him!
He also had entropion surgery on both eyes this week, so no more staples for Chubbs! The sutures seemed to be bothering him yesterday and he was trying to scratch his face on the ground, so Chubbs was put in the cone of shame which he hated! Five minutes in the cone and he was no longer trying to scratch.
Chubbs has quickly learned that when his foster mama’s alarm clock goes off at 7 am, it’s breakfast time! If I close my eyes, even for a second, Chubbs is in my face barking for me to get up and feed him. There’s definitely no hitting the snooze button when Chubbs is around! Besides eating, he enjoys typical bulldog activities including watching TV while sitting in my lap, getting belly rubs and napping.
6/14/2015 Update:Chubbs had another great week with us. He is learning to play nice with his foster brother. Up until this week he pretty much just ignored him. He is taking his meds and sponge baths like a champ. He gets the sutures around his eyes taken out next week. We are planning on attending the meetup at Hollywood Feed next weekend so come out and meet Chubbs.
6/21/2015 Update:Chubbs had an eventful weekend. He had his sutures removed on Saturday and Dr. Whitworth was pleased with how much better his eyes looked. We then headed over to the event at Hollywood Feed. Chubbs doesn’t care much for other dogs coming up to his face and sniffing him, so I put him in a shopping cart with his favorite blanket and he was set for the afternoon. He sat in that cart the whole time and didn’t complain once…mostly because he got lots of hugs and kisses from everyone there. He loved every second of it! He also suckered a few people into sharing their sandwiches with him. The Faithful Four puppies were also at the event and if Chubbs saw someone giving them too much attention and not him, he would let it be known. He didn’t want anyone forgetting about him!
6/28/2015 Update: This week Chubbs decided that he now likes to go on walks. He is doing great in a leash and walks side by side next to his foster brother. When Chubbs isn’t out exercising, he enjoys lounging in his kennel or donut bed and watching tv. He has turned into one spoiled bulldog!
7/5/2015 Update: Chubbs is still taking his meds and waiting for his skin to heal but he’s showing some progress. His fur is staring to slowly grow back over his back and legs. He goes back to the dermatologist tomorrow for a checkup.
He continues to wake his foster mama up at 6:30 every morning to do his business and then to eat his breakfast. He’s definitely got his foster parents working around his schedule.
Chubbs had a great 4th of July. He had no problems with the fireworks. He wanted to eat BBQ like the rest of us humans, but settled for a frozen peanut butter treat instead.
7/12/2015 Update: Another great week for Chubbs! He had a dermatologist appointment on Monday and Dr. Crow said he’s progressing well. He thinks Chubbs has a food allergy in addition to pemphigus so Chubbs was placed on a prescription diet. The good news is that we are seeing an improvement after only 6 days. The bad news is that Chubbs isn’t allowed to eat anything else including treats or bones. He’s not too happy about it but I told him if he wanted to be itch free, he’d have to listen to the doctor’s orders. I bought him some new toys and a new bed to make up for it, all of which he seems to be enjoying.
7/18/2015 Update:Poor Chubbs can’t catch a break! On Sunday night we noticed his left ear was swollen so off to the vet clinic we went. As it turns out, he had a hematoma from all the scratching he’s been doing. Dr. W drained it and Chubbs will be monitored to see if it returns. On the plus side, his skin is looking drastically better. He’s a tough cookie but please keep Chubbs in your thoughts and prayers this week.
Chubbs has really come out of his shell over the past few weeks. He’s made it clear that he wants to be an only dog. However, he loves people. He’d make a great addition to a home that is currently fur free.
7/25/2015 Update: Chubbs spent a good portion of the week at the clinic. Even though his ear was drained, he ended up having to have surgery after all. When I picked him up from the clinic on Friday he was ready to get home to his own bed. He is feeling better and is back to his ole lazy self.
8/2/2015 Update:Chubbs has become very protective of his foster home. He sits in front of the window and barks at anyone who passes the house. But don’t worry…Chubbs is all bark and no bite! He is still getting his nightly bleach baths until his next dermatology appointment in September. He’s learned that when foster momma says “time for your bath” she means business. He trots into the bathroom and sits by the tub and waits for me to lift him in. Funny how he has difficulty getting but has zero problems hopping out when we’re done.
8/9/2015 Update: Chubbs is not enjoying this Texas heat. As a matter of fact, he hates it. He prefers to stay cool in the AC which means lots of lounging around the house. He goes outside to potty then runs right back into the house to his bed. He had his sutures removed from his ear yesterday and is looking like the Bulldog he was meant to be!
8/15/2015 Update: Chubbs is still patiently waiting to find his forever family. In the meantime, he is deligently working on his medical issues and improving by leaps and bounds. His internal alarm clock still goes off at 6:30 a.m. every morning to eat breakfast, take his meds and potty, but by 8 a.m. he’s ready for a nap. He lounges through the rest of the day, occasionally getting up for a belly rub or two. This chunky monkey will make a great addition to a bulldog savy family. He’ll require medication for the rest of his life but it’s a small price to pay for all the slobbery kisses you’ll get in return!
8/22/2015 Update: I was out of town this past week for work which meant Chubbs was left with foster dad. He wasn’t trilled about it (he’s a mama’s boy), but he managed to survive. I told him that if he was good I’d have a surprise waiting for him when I got back. Chubbs was on his best behavior with foster dad, so yesterday I took him to his very own meet and greet. It was love at first sight! Chubbs jumped out the car, ran right up to Paula and gave her a big wet kiss. Paula and Gary can’t wait to spoil Chubbs rotten (as soon as he is cleared by the vet).
