2/24/16 Update: Mercy has been adopted by a wonderful family. Mercy has a one year old EB brother to keep her company. Mom and dad have flexible work hours and Mercy will never be home alone for over a few hours. I feel this is an awesome home that is willing to do whatever they need to do to make an ideal home for Mercy. And the good news is they know what a handful my little can be.
My name is Mercy and at just 3 weeks old, I am the smallest, youngest Bulldog to have ever joined Lone Star Bulldog Club Rescue. Unfortunately, I am blind. You may have already seen me. Seems like I was all over Facebook, but now I’m safe with rescue friends. My breeder gave me to someone because I had lost my eye sight due to infection, and that person was going to keep me.
9/24/15 Update: It was a big day for foster girl Mercy. She visited the vet for worming, and now she’s on her way home. A pooped out pup, for sure!
10/20/15 Update: Update from Mercy’s foster momma: Mercy is growing like a weed! I can’t believe how much she can eat and poop. She is a typical wild puppy and loves to chew. Her favorite thing to bite is my skin! We are working on her learning the difference between her chew toys and my arm.
At this point, Mercy couldn’t care less if she is in trouble and in fact, she welcomes the challenge. Oh the joys of puppyhood!
12/15/15 Update: Update from Mercy’s foster momma: Mercy and her foster sister have taken advantage of our beautiful weather and I can proudly state she is about as potty trained as she can be at her baby age. Of course, her bladder is still small and she has to go frequently, and we still use potty pads, but she loves and expects a lot of praise when we go outside.
Mercy wants me to mention that she will be ready for adoption in approximately another month and all of you awesome folks out there that have watched her grow: get ready! She wants to remind you that she is a normal puppy in every way, except she is completely blind. She has the energy level of of any Bulldog puppy, loves to chew and has teeth like little razors. She’s still not at all sure about being on a leash, but is starting to accept it in very small doses.
She loves going on walks in the stroller with her foster sister, but requires something to chew on to keep her from shredding the inside of the stroller. It will take a special family to adopt Mercy, as she requires a lot of special attention.
She will also do best with a tolerant dog companion. Her foster sis is very patient (to a tolerable degree) and another dog helps her to maneuver. She learns her way around quickly, but of course in her excited puppy way, she can run into an obstacle at a dead run. And she also wants me to mention that her favorite thing in the whole world is to settle down after a lot of activity and cuddle with her foster mommy on the couch!
1/11/16 Update: Mercy is approximately 4 1/2 months old and growing like a weed. Her personality is abloom, along with her adaptability skills. The eye specialist confirmed the previous diagnosis… Mercy has NO vision. It breaks my heart, but at the same time, she amazes me with her compensation skills.
Her hearing is fine tuned to a level that only a loss of vision would allow. I have also noticed in the past week that she has actually become aware that …something is missing. She has developed a bit of fear of the unknown. This is a good thing because she can not see and she needs to be a bit cautious of where she makes her next step. Her adoptive family will need to know how to handle the needs of a blind dog.
1/17/16 Update: Mercy is so excited to visit Hollywood Feed in McKinney on Saturday!! Because of her young age and her lack of vision she tires from a lot of stimulation—but she loves it!! For all of you awesome folks who have followed Mercy from 3 weeks of age, this is the time to come meet her. Foster mom & Mercy would love to meet the perfect furever family for her. Mercy would love to meet a family that has another dog to play with & most importantly a dog that would take her under their wing and be her guide dog!! She would love to meet that family!! Breed doesn’t matter—just willing to love her & guide her. Don’t forget that Mercy is a 5 month old puppy & ALL in her furever family must be tolerant and patient with a “busy” blind puppy. Please come see us!! We will be there from 12-3!! Mercy can’t wait to meet you!!
1/24/16 Update: Yesterday was an incredible day with Hollywood Feed and all the amazing people and Bulldogs. I was so afraid that Mercy would be frightened by all the strange noises, but instead she was ecstatic going from person to person to be loved on! She especially loved Missy because she found time to rest in her loving arms. It was an amazing day for Bulldog rescue! Oh, and by the way, I took Mercy home and fed her, then took her out to potty and she was in bed by 5:00. She didn’t move until 8:30 this morning. Apparently, being a social butterfly was exhausting!
2/4/16 Update on our blind babe Mercy: Mercy received the rest of her vaccines today and scheduled for her surgeries on Feb. 16. She weighs almost 31 pounds now!
My happiness at announcing that Baby Mercy has found a furever home in New Mexico is certainly clouded with incredible sadness that I’m losing my baby girl. Her new dad will be here Wednesday night to meet with her and then start home Thursday morning. Her new mom isn’t coming so that she can spend the next 7 days off work to be with her and help her make the adjustments. Mercy will have a one year old EB brother to keep her company.
