5/31/25 INTRODUCTION: Welcome Onyx back to our rescue family! From volunteer Dianne: On June 20, 2022, we got a frantic call from a woman in rural Terrell, Texas. She said someone had dumped a Bulldog and a puppy at her gate—and she was terrified the dogs wouldn’t survive if we didn’t come quickly. She had large, territorial dogs on her property and no experience with Bulldogs.

Without a smartphone to send pictures and with her panic on the phone, it was hard to know what kind of dog we were dealing with. Was it really a Bulldog, a Pit Bull, or something else entirely? I kept describing the classic “short, fat, flat face—like the Marine mascot,” but she didn’t quite follow. Regardless, we knew we had to go.

Sheliah and I made the trip, navigating a rough gravel road filled with deep potholes and standing water. The road dead-ended at her gate, so we had to find a back way in—longer, but passable.

When we arrived, the woman and a man were waiting with a Bulldog and a blind Frenchie puppy on leashes. While she claimed the dogs had been dumped, it was clear these dogs likely belonged to her—and that there were more dogs behind that gate. We took both dogs. The Frenchie eventually went to a rescue better suited for her special needs. The Bulldog, whom we named Onyx, began her new chapter with us.

We spayed her, vaccinated her, microchipped her, and gave her all the care she deserved. But then, the person who originally bred her found her on our Facebook page—and was furious. She demanded Onyx back, claiming we had no right to spay her. She said she loved her and would pay her medical expenses.

The breeder went to our vet’s office to pick her up, yet refused to get out of the car. Another man in the car went inside the office, acted like he was going to pay, then ran out the door with Onyx.

We were heartbroken for Onyx. The breeder and I had multiple heated conversations, but she had won. Not because she truly wanted Onyx, but because she didn’t want us to have her.

Fast forward a few years—Onyx vanished again. Whether the breeder lost her or sold her, we’ll never know. But she resurfaced in Sulphur Springs, sitting alone by the side of the road. A kind woman found her, went door to door, and finally located someone who recognized her. Turns out, she had belonged to this man’s son, but the son didn’t want her anymore—because she was “fixed.” The woman took her in and gave her a real home for three years.

Sadly, life changed. A divorce and working two jobs made it impossible to keep her. That’s when Onyx’s microchip led her back to us.

Today, Onyx is older—probably 5 or 6—thicker around the middle, and struggling to breathe. She may still have heartworms. Her coat is soft as silk and her nails are quite long—her former owner simply couldn’t trim them alone. There’s no paperwork and no proof that she’s seen a vet since 2022. But what’s clear is that this girl has lived a very hard life.

As I watched her walk back into our rescue, I felt the tears well up. All the pain, the battles with the breeder, the uncertainty—it all came flooding back. But one thing remains true: Onyx is microchipped to us. She’s home again. And this time, we’re determined to give her the peace, care and love she’s always deserved.

6/19/25 UPDATE: Onyx here, reporting from the comfiest couch ever!

Foster mom said it was the perfect spot for a nap—and wow, was she right. I’ll let her brag about me while I catch a few more zzz’s…

✨ Foster mom’s notes: Onyx is truly a gem—sweet as pie and full of love. She adores attention, especially hugs and kisses on the top of her head. She’s a well-mannered housemate who gets along wonderfully with the other pups here. While she won’t put up with any nonsense (a little grumble sets the record straight), she’s quick to move on and keep the peace.

✅ Potty trained
✅ Affectionate
✅ Couch nap pro
✅ A heart full of love

Whoever adopts Onyx is in for a lifetime of love, loyalty, and the best snuggle sessions ever.

6/22/25 UPDATE: Onyx needs a family! She shares: Big news from your favorite foster girl — I made it onto the couch!

Whoohoo! And let me tell you… it’s so much softer than the floor. It’s the perfect spot for a nap, a little TV time, and best of all — cuddles with my foster mom. She says I’m a top-tier snuggler, and honestly? I think she’s right.

Cuddling might just be my favorite thing… well, right after treats, of course.

If you’re looking for a loving, loyal companion who’s happiest curled up next to you (preferably with snacks nearby), I might be your girl! Go ahead and send in those applications — and while I’m not busy snoozing or munching, I promise to give them my full attention. Maybe you’ll be a perfect match for me!

7/27/25 UPDATE: Onyx needs a family! She writes: I’ve been working hard on my new figure—because modeling for Foster Mom is serious business!

Last week, I posed for her art class, and let’s just say… I was a hit. Everyone said I was absolutely beautiful!

I hate to sound immodest, but when you’ve got it—flaunt it, right?

Foster Mom says I’m the best girl of the bunch. I love hugs, I’m a professional snuggler (sofa or chair—I’m not picky), and I am obsessed with dog cookies. I even try to help mom open the treat box… teamwork makes the treat work.

So if you’re ready to bring home a now semi-famous supermodel with a heart of gold, don’t wait—get that application in and maybe we’ll be a perfect match. I might be snapped up fast!
8/3/25 UPDATE: Onyx needs a family! She writes: I may be a little older, but as my foster mom says — I’m fit as a fiddle!

After last week’s modeling gig (did you see me work the camera? 📸), I’ve been keeping up my exercise routine so I’ll be in tip-top shape when it’s time to head to my next home.

Foster Mom tells me I’m the sweetest girl ever and says any family would be so lucky to have me.

Could that family be you? 💕

11/4/25 UPDATE: We’re working to match Onyx to the right family for her! From her foster momma: Onyx is a sweet girl with a spicy side! She may not get along with all dogs, but if they mind their business she will mind hers.
