Fifi La Fume

Fifi La Fume

4/5/26 Today we said goodbye to our sweet girl, Fifi La Fume, as she made her way to her next chapter in Oklahoma. 💛

We are incredibly grateful to Jen at Bully For You Bulldog Rescue and Sanctuary for welcoming Fifi La Fume with open arms. Their team provides 24/7 care and is deeply committed to helping the dogs who need it most, especially those who are terminally ill or considered less adoptable.

While it’s never easy to say goodbye, we find so much comfort knowing Fifi La Fume is exactly where she needs to be, surrounded by compassion, expertise and unwavering dedication.

Thank you, Jen, for giving our girl this opportunity and for the incredible work you do every single day.

1/31/26 INTRODUCTION ~ Please welcome Fifi La Fume to our rescue family! She writes: I joined rescue on Thursday, and before you ask… yes, I am happy! I know my face might say otherwise, but that’s just my face. Resting Bulldog face is a real thing.

On Friday, I went to the vet, and whew… what an adventure. I was poked and prodded, donated a little blood for a heartworm test, and at one point I let out a very dramatic sound. Not exactly a cry. More like a loud, soulful moan. Totally justified.

Turns out my ears have been infected for a long time, so much so that my ear canals are very narrow. They’re all packed up now, and I can’t hear a thing. But honestly, the silence is kind of peaceful. One of my eyes is dry, the other is not, I’ve got some hair loss on my sides, and I could really use a nice warm coat.

Oh, and I slipped on the ice and couldn’t get back up. A kind stranger ran over to help me… and then he slipped too. I laughed. He did not. 😌

I was surrendered because I didn’t care for the resident dogs. According to my paperwork, I like boy dogs, preferably bigger ones. Girl dogs? No thank you. They’re jealous of me, and I am not interested in that kind of drama.

Some people think that at age 8, no one will want to adopt me. I strongly disagree. One look at this face tells me I’ll find a fur-free home where I can be the one and only, spoiled exactly as a Bulldog lady deserves.

And just so we’re clear. My name is Fifi La Fume. Not like a poodle named Fifi. Like a Bulldog lady named Fifi. Fifi La Fume, if you please.

2/1/26 UPDATE ~ From the foster momma: Fifi La Fume and I have been together just over 24 hours, and she’s already telling us a lot about herself. She is the first Bulldog I’ve fostered who didn’t jump on people at all. Instead, she greeted me calmly, came right over, and happily accepted pets. That was my first clue that she’s an 8-year-old lady, and also the oldest Bulldog I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.
She was absolutely perfect in the car, which is always a relief. The drive from Allen to Mesquite allows plenty of opportunity for Bulldog shenanigans, but Fifi La Fume simply sat quietly in the back seat and rode like a pro. She needed a little help getting in, but hopped out on her own once we arrived.

We stopped in the backyard first, and she clearly knew exactly what to do. She’s familiar with a sliding patio door, too. After taking care of business, she headed straight back inside. She now stands at that door when she needs to go out, and we’ve had no accidents so far.

Fifi La Fume seems to be either a grazer or just not very food-motivated right now. She’s definitely not displaying classic Bulldog gusto. I added some wet food, which helped a bit, and I wonder if she may have some soreness in her mouth. I also suspect she can’t hear much at the moment. Her ears are severely infected and were packed with medication by the vet, so it’s very likely that’s affecting her hearing. She doesn’t respond to her name or to whistling. Though it’s also possible she helped write the Bulldog chapter titled “How to Ignore Your People.”

Her paperwork noted that she’s a sofa and bed dog, but bedtime was a bit of a challenge. She doesn’t seem to understand doggie stairs, and it took her about an hour to work up the courage to jump onto the bed. When she did, she succeeded on the first try, though she growled when I tried to help her. Once settled, however, she slept soundly through the night.

Her records mention cysts on her paws, which I’m trying to get a better look at. Between those, her long nails (which I’ll tackle later this week), and her recent injuries from a dog fight, it’s clear she’s been uncomfortable for some time. She also has an eye infection, and I suspect she may have limited vision in that eye. She seems to rely more on her left eye when looking at me.

Today, she spent about two hours in the crate. After some initial barking, she settled in and took a nap. I even ran out briefly to pick up wet food while she slept. Another sign that she may not hear well right now, as I was home for several minutes before she seemed to realize it.

Overall, her disposition is very sweet. Part of me wonders if she’s a bit shut down, which wouldn’t be surprising. I don’t know how long she was with the person who surrendered her, but I suspect her world has been unstable for at least a couple of weeks.

If love can heal, Fifi La Fume is in the right place. I just hope I can do right by her and I’m committed to trying my very best. 💙
