It’s official… Sally Joy has been adopted! As soon as Joe and Stacy laid eyes on this beautiful girl, they knew they had to add her to their family. Sally Joy will be spoiled beyond measure!
I’m excited to introduce myself on this special day—International Dog Day! I’m about 3 years old, and I’m making my debut into rescue today because it just feels right.
Here’s a little about my journey: On May 5, I was found tied to a pole with nothing but a trash bag full of my belongings. I don’t know why this happened—I don’t think I did anything wrong. I do remember having puppies a few times, though, which my body kindly reminds me of.
Luckily, a kind soul at a local shelter took me in. I quickly became a favorite there, and my new friend even took me home to care for me. I tested positive for heartworms, and she made sure I got the treatment I needed—30 days of doxycycline, two painful shots, and 30 days of rest. Guess what? I even got to sleep in her bed during my recovery!
But as much as she loved me, we both knew it was time for me to move on so she could help other dogs in need. It was a tearful goodbye, but here I am, ready to start a new chapter.
I’m hoping to find a family who will never tire of me and never tie me up outside with just a trash bag. I’m ready to bring joy and love into your life!
8/29/24 Update: Sally Joy is settling into her foster home, and her foster family is already smitten!
Sally Joy made herself right at home. She found her food bowl, water bowl, and then showed the resident dog how well she can walk on a leash.
We can’t wait to learn more about this sweet girl.
9/6/24 Update: Sally Joy is settling in well at her foster home. She needed extra coaxing to eat kibble for her first few meals, but she couldn’t resist beef gravy or shredded chicken.
Sally Joy did well in the bath. While she’s not a fan of having her nose winkles cleaned, she tolerates it in exchange for treats.
Sally Joy will retreat to her crate when she needs some space, but she decided to try the couch today and I think she enjoyed it.
9/12/24 Update: We absolutely love Sally Joy! She is such a character and we are still learning about her as she gets used to being in our home.
Overall, Sally Joy is a very calm and sweet girl. We have two dogs in our home (11 year old female and 2 year old male). She isn’t bossy or dominant, but when our male gets in her space, Sally Joy will give him a warning bark to back up. (Honestly, he needs to be put in his place sometimes because he has no concept of personal boundaries).
We also have two children in our home. When the girls get excited and their voices reach a window-breaking pitch, Sally Joy also gets excited. On occasion, she’s gotten a little mouthy, but she calms down easily when you tell her to do so.
Sally Joy loves being on the couch and hates being crated. She will go in the crate when we leave the house if I carry her there or if I have a super high-reward treat (a piece of chicken, steak, or jerky – not a dog cookie ~ she’s not a fan). She definitely thinks she deserves table food and won’t leave the kitchen if anyone has food.
She is perfectly potty trained and knows how to use a doggy door. The reason we crate is because we don’t want her chewing on anything while she’s not being supervised. She has grabbed a shoe or two, but listens well when you tell her to drop it. I don’t think she’s figured out what she’s allowed to chew on yet. She doesn’t seek out the chewing of human stuff ~ she just gets excited and grabs whatever is next to her. We are trying to find a toy that she likes (no luck so far).
She’s great on a leash, but wants to follow you out when we open the front door. She always tries to go out. Because she’s so tiny, it’s easy to keep her in. I think she just wants to be where her people are.
