Harley Heartbreak

10/27/25 INTRODUCTION: Please welcome Harley Heartbreak to our rescue family. ❤️

Sometimes, when you love a Bulldog, you reach a heartbreaking point where you simply can’t keep up with their medical needs any longer. Life happens and it isn’t always fair. That’s the story of Harley Heartbreak.

Her family loved her deeply, but her care needs became more than they could manage. Rather than let her continue to struggle, they made the difficult, selfless decision to surrender her to rescue… to give her the chance to get the medical attention she deserves.

Harley Heartbreak comes to us with several challenges: her tail is infected and painful, her eyes are in rough shape and require daily medication, her vaccinations have lapsed, and she still needs to be spayed. She’s what we’d call a medical work-in-progress, but beneath all that, she’s one of the sweetest, most loving girls you could ever meet. 💕

It’s easy for outsiders to say, “If they loved her, they would have done more.” But the truth is, they did love her. Sometimes love means knowing when to ask for help and recognizing that her life might be better with another family.

Rather than spending energy on judgment, let’s focus on healing Harley and building her future. That’s where our time, love, and compassion truly matter.

Harley Heartbreak is 5 years old, and thanks to our rescue community, she now has a second chance. 🐾

12/7/25 UPDATE ~ From the foster momma: Harley Heartbreak has taken us on quite the ride and kept us very busy (lol).

First, let me say this: Harley truly is a sweetheart and a little heartbreaker. She’s loving, sensitive and endearing… but right now she requires a tremendous amount of time, patience and hands-on care.

Harley has been with us since November 17 and we’re fortunate that, as independent artists, Jason and I can be home with her. She hasn’t been left alone for more than two hours since arriving, and she really depends on consistent companionship. She’s had several nights of restlessness and crying. Keeping a calm routine has been essential.

House-training is still a work in progress. She has christened nearly every rug, couch, bed and dog bed (I’m on a first-name basis with the laundry room at this point). The good news: she is slowly starting to use pee pads — yay!

Her post-surgery checkup went well. Harley had her tail fully removed due to a severe infection, and that area has healed nicely. Her sutures are out. She will need cyclosporine 2% eye drops twice daily for life, and her vision is poor, which seems to affect her confidence and behavior throughout the day. She also has a significant yeast infection under one eye, so we’re using chlorhexidine solution on her face folds and continuing treatment.

On the behavioral side, Harley has claimed every dog bed in the house — hers and our boys’ — to hump. We tried redirecting at first, but it seems to be a stress-relieving behavior for her, so now we let her safely do it in a separate room before bedtime.

Our boys have been absolute angels with her. They observe her chaos from a respectful distance and give her space when she needs it. They do not appreciate being humped (fair enough), but they’ve handled her with incredible patience and gentle boundaries.

Harley can be fearful with new people and immediately runs behind my legs when she’s unsure. She also gets nervous if she’s alone, so predictability and proximity are very important for her right now.

Harley is incredibly loving, but she requires extensive emotional and medical support. She will need an adopter who truly understands Bulldog-specific needs, has flexible time at home, can provide steady companionship and can maintain her daily medical routine. She lost her family, lost her tail, gone through surgery, is fighting infections and is trying to navigate a brand-new environment all at once. It’s a lot for one girl.

The good news is that she is beginning to respond to predictable routines and familiar voices. Little by little, she’s settling. She needs a calm, stable environment, consistent patterns, plenty of reassurance and someone patient enough to guide her through all the hard stuff she’s unpacking.

Jason and I are committed to helping her through this transition and giving her the patience she deserves. A disruption or abrupt change would be very tough on her emotionally right now. 💔

We love this girl, and we’re doing everything we can to help her find her footing… one gentle day at a time.
1/1/26 UPDATE: We’re working to match Harley Heartbreak to a great family for her!

Harley Heartbreak is an incredibly loving and special dog who forms deep bonds with her people. She is expressive, affectionate and full of personality. At the same time, it’s important to be transparent that Harley Heartbreak may be considered a high-needs Bulldog, both medically and behaviorally. She requires a dedicated, experienced caregiver who can provide consistent support.

Medically, Harley needs ongoing hands-on care and close supervision. She experiences anxiety episodes and can struggle to self-regulate. These episodes are understandably alarming, and as a result, Harley was seen by a veterinarian. She was diagnosed with an ear yeast infection, which is likely contributing to pain and discomfort. Her ear was thoroughly cleaned, and she has since been started on two additional medications, one to treat the infection and one for pain management.

In addition, Harley requires eye drops twice daily for life and is currently on medication for a chronic facial yeast infection. At her follow-up appointment, the veterinarian will reassess her progress and may introduce gabapentin if her episodes continue.

Behaviorally, Harley Heartbreak may not be considered an easy or low-maintenance Bulldog. She can be restless, especially at night, and often takes time to settle. Sleep interruptions are common, as she may need reassurance and multiple nighttime bathroom breaks. A home with a dog door and an owner who is comfortable managing overnight disruptions would be especially beneficial.

Harley Heartbreak is very talkative, attention-seeking and has a unique fondness for perching on tabletops. She thrives with structure, predictability and consistent human presence. Having caregivers with flexible schedules has been essential to meeting her needs.

One of Harley Heartbreak’s brightest qualities is her energy and playfulness. She is very active and requires daily engagement through walks, playtime and interactive attention. When her physical and mental needs are met, she does best. She especially loves playing ball and will happily kick it around like a soccer player. Staying engaged helps her feel secure and reduces anxious behaviors.

Because of her medical, emotional and behavioral needs, Harley Heartbreak will require an experienced Bulldog owner who truly understands the breed, is comfortable with ongoing medical care and has the time, patience and commitment to support her. She is not a “plug-and-play” Bulldog or simply a cute companion. She needs consistency, involvement and a strong human bond.

That said, Harley Heartbreak is absolutely not a “bad dog.” Far from it. She is loving, affectionate, deeply bonded to her people and full of personality. Her needs are simply higher than average. The primary goal is to ensure Harley Heartbreak is placed in the right home the first time, one that fully understands and is prepared for what caring for her truly looks like.

With the right, patient, experienced and present adopter, Harley Heartbreak has the potential to succeed and be a deeply rewarding companion.
