Champ David (now Bruno)

Champ David (now Bruno)

11/2/25 FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS ~ We were heartbroken to learn that our sweet alumnus Bruno (formerly Champ David), adopted in March, crossed the Rainbow Bridge. His family shared the sad news with us today, along with a beautiful message that shows just how deeply he was loved:

“Champ David, aka Bruno, passed unexpectedly this morning. I just wanted you to know. We are beyond devastated. We enjoyed the time we did have him in our home. He brought so much love and humor into our lives. He was so loved, and he showed us love every day.”

Run free, sweet Bruno. 🌈 You’ll always be part of our rescue family, and your gentle spirit and joyful heart will never be forgotten.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Champ David, now “Bruno,” is living his best life with his new family in Amarillo. It was love at first sight and he’s already a mama’s boy!
Champ’s story is all too familiar. He found himself in a small shelter, desperately in need of care. His soft palate and both eyes required surgery, and he needed to be neutered along with receiving basic veterinary care.
Though Champ acts like a playful 4-year-old, his gray muzzle and unhealthy fur tell a different story. Just like us, dogs can show signs of premature aging from poor nutrition and stress. Given Champ’s condition when he arrived, it’s clear his previous care was lacking—if not outright neglectful. Take a look at his shelter picture and you’ll see exactly what we mean.
But that chapter is behind him now! The Bulldog Bungalow has been home to countless dogs, each waiting for their “happily ever after,” and Champ is no exception. We’ve encountered the “three D’s of rescue” many times—dogs who are scared, angry, defensive, overconfident, or shut down; those who spontaneously urinate or detach emotionally. But Champ? He’s in a league of his own! Despite everything he’s been through, Champ is infectiously happy. A few weeks into healing from multiple surgeries, in a new environment with new people and dogs, he greets everyone he meets with a giant smile, a full-body wiggle, and an endless reservoir of joy.
As his foster mom, one of my responsibilities is to capture and share pictures of the dogs in my care. Normally, this isn’t an issue—until now. He is either sitting directly under me or refuses to sit still long enough for a proper photo! The moment I try, he breaks into his wiggle, sidewalk scoot, rhino trot, or a full-body smile, and comes bounding over to me. It’s like trying to photograph 50 pounds of liquid happiness—impossible, but oh so delightful!
I’ll keep trying to get a good shot of this happy boy and will share updates soon. For now, welcome Champ to LSBR and stay tuned for more stories of his incredible journey!
1/24/25 Update:  Champ David breaking news!
Champ David is getting antsy, and honestly, can you blame him? After a full day spa that turned into the ultimate Bulldog makeover, Champ David is ready to get back to his regularly scheduled programming of snuggles, wiggles, and exploring the world.
Here’s what he’s been up to:
Elongated soft palate? Resectioned.
Bilateral everted laryngeal saccules? Removed.
Stenotic nares? Widened like a highway.
Entropion surgery on both the upper AND lower lids? Handled.
Castration with scrotal ablation? He’s a whole new man. Well, sorta.
That’s right—Champ David got the full VIP treatment, and while he’s feeling so much better, his current agenda is drumroll, please no playing, only resting, eating soft food, and snuggling. (Yes, it’s as boring for him as it sounds.)
The good news? Champ David is recovering wonderfully and is almost ready for adoption. We’ll check in with the vet this week to (fingers crossed) get the all-clear for more activity. There’s a possibility he may need further care, and we’ll keep you updated—full transparency is the name of the game!
Here’s the tea on Champ David:
He’s a middle-aged gent with a love for belly rubs, booty scratches, and soft places to nap (your couch, please and thank you).
He’s a diplomat when it comes to other pets—calm and chill with dogs and politely curious about feral cats.
Need a low-energy companion for your older dog?
Got a young pup who needs a calming influence?
Sleeps soundly in his crate, loves the sofa, and is always down for a snuggle session.
For now, Champ David’s hanging out in his “Bachelor Pad” (aka separated from the resident Bulldog to ensure his recovery stays on track), dreaming of playdates and sunny afternoons with his future family.
2/7/25 Update:  Champ David: The 45 pound – fun-sized love machine with the cutest underbite!
This the pint-sized, people-loving, tail-wagging Bulldog is ready for find his next home!
At 4–5 years old (according to two vets—so, you know, official), Champ David is like that cool guy from high school who went gray early, but was universally adored. He’s got charm, confidence, and a whole lot of love to give.
Champ’s Superpowers:
Social Butterfly – Loves everyone—old dogs, young dogs, grumpy dogs, shy dogs. No drama, only vibes.
Trustworthy Roommate – No chewing, no messes. House-trained and crate-approved.
Affection Factory – Snuggles? Unlimited. Kisses? Complimentary. Belly rubs? Highly encouraged.
Certified Goofball – Gentle, funny, and always down for a good time.
Low-Maintenance King – He’s had the full Bulldog Makeover and just needs soft food and regular ear cleanings.
Underbite Extraordinaire – Seriously, his little underbite is next-level adorable and will absolutely melt your heart.
Champ David’s One Quirk: He’s not about that walk life. Strolling the neighborhood? Meh. Spotting a car he can jump into? YES, PLEASE. This guy is ride or die—literally.
Champ David is one of the easiest, most lovable Bulldogs we’ve ever had. If you’re looking for a best friend with a heart of gold, a touch of premature wisdom, and an underbite that deserves its own fan club, Champ David is your guy.
2/27/25 Update:  Champ David’s weekly update: The what did you do 5 edition!
Apparently, it’s a thing to share five things you did last week, so Champ David is on it. Here’s what this fun-sized love machine has been up to:
Slept in the bed – Living that luxury life. He’s all about the optimum snuggle experience.
Learned to walk on a leash – Okay, “learned” might be a strong word, but we’re making progress.
Climbed in the refrigerator – No regrets. There might have been snacks involved.
Got his teeth cleaned – And by “cleaned,” we mean he had a couple of teeth evicted. But don’t worry, he’s still rocking that adorable underbite and eating like a champ (pun intended).
Spent time stumbling and chasing his loudmouth sister around the yard – Champ loves a good backyard adventure, even if he’s not exactly the most coordinated. But here’s the kicker—he never barks at anything. So if you’re looking for a guard dog yeah, Champ is not your guy. If you’re looking for a couch companion with zero interest in security duties, though? He’s perfect.
Champ David is still on the hunt for a home! Could that be you? If you want a snuggly, snack-seeking, silent-but-hilarious sidekick, Champ is your guy.
3/7/25 Update:  He’s worn out from a week of snuggles. If you’re looking for the perfect lap dog, Champ David might be your guy.
