Crush

Crush

Yesterday, we welcomed Crush into our lives with the hope that he would become our Valentine’s Day crush. He was a senior Bulldog with a gentle spirit that we could feel from the moment we laid eyes on him. But we never imagined how quickly our hearts would be shattered.

Crush was not a shelter newbie. He had been there several times, and his owner would always come for him. This time, after a brutal attack—his ear nearly ripped off and a 4″ deep puncture wound oozing infection—his owner once again promised they would come.

The shelter staff did what they could to help Crush ~ taking him to a vet for pain relief and antibiotics, all while waiting for his owner to arrive. But each day that passed, Crush’s condition grew worse. His body was covered in dried blood, and the stench of his suffering was nearly unbearable.

For three agonizing days, he lay in that shelter, waiting. For three days, he endured more pain than any dog should ever know—all because his owner didn’t show up. The neglect he suffered, the agony he faced, it all seems barbaric. Crush, in his golden years, had been subjected to violence and abandonment.

What kind of life had he lived before? It was heartbreaking to imagine, but in our hearts, we hoped his next chapter would be one of healing and love.

Volunteers Sheliah and Dianne acted swiftly, pulling him from the shelter and rushing him to our vet. We were determined to give him what he had missed for so long: love, comfort, soft beds, and the peace of knowing he was cared for. But, as the hours passed, it became painfully clear that our time with Crush was running out.

When volunteer Lari arrived at the vet this afternoon, she was devastated. After years of rescuing animals, she thought she had seen it all—but seeing Crush in such a broken state was beyond words. He was shaking from the pain, his body swollen from the attack. His nails were long and unkempt, his teeth rotting, and his belly bloated with fluid. The abscess on his side had grown larger than a Texas-sized cantaloupe, a constant reminder of the violence he had endured.

We wanted to do everything in our power to ease his suffering, but we were limited. The vet had administered pain meds and antibiotics, but Crush was still in agony. It was then that we were faced with the most heartbreaking decision any rescuer could make: to help him cross the Rainbow Bridge, and end his pain.

With tears streaming down her face, Lari whispered to Crush, apologizing for the life he had known. “I’m so sorry, Crush,” she said. “You deserved so much more.” She stayed by his side in his final moments, offering him the comfort and love he must have been denied for way too long.

Though we could only offer Crush peace in the end, he will never be forgotten. We will always honor him as a part of our rescue family. He deserved love, warmth, and the comfort of knowing he was truly cared for. And while we could only give him that in his final moments, his memory will live on in our hearts.

So run free, sweet Crush, at the Rainbow Bridge. We hope you find other Bulldogs there to show you the love and companionship you were denied here. You were loved deeply by those who knew your suffering, and we will never forget you.

You will always have a special place in our hearts, even if it was only for a brief moment. Your story will inspire us to keep fighting for Bulldogs like you, and we hope your memory will encourage others to join the cause—whether through volunteering, fostering, adopting, or donating. Every act of kindness makes a difference.
